Australia – Job ads see annual upswing in April with strong labour demand anticipated

03 May 2022

Job advertisements in Australia rose by 26.3% in April 2022 on a seasonally adjusted basis when compared to the same period in April 2021, according to data from ANZ Bank.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the number of jobs ads fell by 0.5% in April 2022 when compared to March 2022, however it remained 57.3% above pre-pandemic levels.

ANZ Bank’s data is based on information provided by the operators of the following sites: Seek.com.au, and the Department of Education, Skills and Employment’s Australian JobSearch site (Jobsearch.gov.au).

The total number of job ads recorded in April 2022 stood at 242,536.

ANZ Head of Australian Economics, David Plank, said, “We expect strong labour demand to lead to solid employment gains in the coming months. We see the unemployment rate dropping well below 4% in the second half of 2022, which should reinforce the momentum toward higher wages growth.”

Recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed that employment in Australia increased by 338,300 in March 2022, an increase of 2.6% from the same period a year ago. At the same time, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 4.0%, down from 5.7% in March 2021 and unchanged from the previous month.
