Australia – Guidelines call for four-drink maximum for miners on site

25 May 2022

The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia and its member companies aim to limit alcohol consumption at on-site accommodation facilities for mine workers. The chamber released the guidelines this week.

“Events over the past 18 months, including the ongoing Parliamentary Inquiry into sexual harassment against women in the [fly-in, fly-out] mining industry, have strengthened our resolve to provide safe and inclusive workspaces for all of the sector’s 156,000-plus employees,” said Rob Carruthers, director of policy and advocacy at the chamber.

The guidelines call for a four-drink limit over a 24-hour period for all accommodation residents. It also calls for a prohibition on shots or double servings, which can encourage rapid consumption. In addition, they aim to ensure that nonalcoholic drinks, including water, are available as well as food options when alcohol is served.

Some workers have raised concerns that employers are not subject to the guidelines, the Daily Mail reported.

Reuters reported that Western Australia will publish a report next month on sexual harassment at mining operations.

Mining company Rio Tinto earlier this year released a report  on its culture, looking into sexual harassment, bullying, racism and other forms of discrimination.
