Salaries for the class of 2017 gained ground for several majors from this point last year but salaries for other majors dipped, according to preliminary salary survey data released by the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

The average overall salary for class of 2017 grads with bachelor’s degrees fell 2.9% compared to the class of 2016, according to preliminary salary survey data released by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. NACE’s Fall 2017 Salary Survey found the overall average salary for the class of 2017 is $51,022, down from the average salary of $52,569 reported for the class of 2016 in fall 2016.

But, even though the overall average salary has slipped, the salaries for some majors have gone up. For example, the average salary for those earning degrees in computer science now stands at $74,183, up 3.7% from last year’s opening salary and the highest paid class of 2017 graduates at the bachelor’s degree level.

Although engineering graduates place second on the top-paid list for 2017 bachelor’s degree graduates, their overall average salary is $64,530, down 2.4% from last year’s average. This year’s average may be more realistic, however, as last year’s average salary was up 7% due to one respondent reporting many extremely high salaries.

The average starting salary for mathematics/statistics grads fell 15% from last year to $53,259.
