Unemployment rate ticks up annually in Germany to 5.7% in October, temporary employment declines in August

According to data from the Federal Employment Agency, Germany’s unemployment rate stood at 5.7% in October, up 0.4% over the previous year and up 0.1% compared to the previous month.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate stood at 5.8%, up 0.1% over the previous month.

Unemployment fell by 20,000 month-on-month to 2,607,000 in October 2023 as a result of the autumn recovery. Seasonally adjusted, the number of unemployed increased by 30,000 compared to the previous month. 

Compared to October of last year, the number of unemployed is 165,000 higher. 

The number of persons in temporary employment stood at 684,000 as of 31 August 2023. This was lower than the 686,000 recorded the prior month and 725,048 recorded in August 2022.

Underemployment rose by 26,000 in seasonally adjusted terms compared to the previous month. In October 2023, it was 3,441,000 people. That was 191,000 more than a year ago. Without taking Ukrainian refugees into account, underemployment would have only been 122,000 higher than the previous year.

Meanwhile, the number of employed people rose slightly by 3,000 in September 2023, seasonally adjusted, compared to the previous month. At 46.19 million people, it was 297,000 higher than the previous year.
