UK – Taxify banned in London just days after it launches, appeals loss of licence (Business Insider)

11 September 2017

Estonia-based ride sharing app Taxify, which launched last week in London, was ordered by Transport for London to stop its operations on Friday over its licensing arrangements and Taxify has appealed the loss of its licence, reports the Business Insider UK. Transport for London said it was "urgently investigating" the company and revoked its licence due to its unusual licensing arrangements in London. Taxify is not licensed as a private hire operator under the name "Taxify”, rather it acquired a different cab company which does hold a licence, called City Drive Services. The idea was to circumvent the licensing application process and launch quickly in London. The company argued that any drivers working for Taxify are in fact working for City Drive Services and it just provides the booking software, and therefore doesn't need its own licence, however Transport for London stated that it is not a licenced operator and revoked City Drive’s licence. Taxify chief executive Markus Villig stated that he would "do everything possible" to bring Taxify back to London.
