UK – Santander offers ‘one hour a month’ contracts to its staff (Financial Times)

28 March 2017

Santander, a high street bank in the UK, has been advertising for on call staff who are guaranteed one hour of work per month, reports the Financial Times. The bank employs 371 on-call customer service assistants on the one-hour contracts. The on-call staff represents 10% of its customers service advisers. The one-hour contract representsa variation of the zero-hours contracts which have garnered controversy over its ‘insecure work’ nature. Santander stated that the bank’s one-hour contracts offer ‘full employment rights with no obligation to accept additional hours or exclusivity.’
