UK – Police arrest suspected illegal gangmaster on suspicion of modern slavery offences

06 August 2018

Police in Suffolk and officers from the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) have arrested a man supplying food processing staff on suspicion of modern slavery and gangmaster offences.

Officers from the GLAA assisted by Suffolk police arrested the 42-year-old Romanian man in a dawn operation last week for suspected human trafficking offenses under Section 2 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and acting as an unlicensed gangmaster under Section 12 of the Gangmasters (Licensing) Act 2004.

The officers had acted following allegations that the suspect had been supplying workers into the regulated food processing sector before controlling their work through accommodation, wages and other aspects.

The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues.
