UK – Numbers of London jobs, job-seekers fall in April, Morgan McKinley reports

11 May 2018

The number of jobs available in London fell 26% in April compared to a year ago, according to the London Employment Monitor report by recruitment agency Morgan McKinley. The City also saw a 25% decrease in professionals seeking jobs year over year.

So far, the London job market appears to mirror the trajectory of 2017, according to Hakan Enver, managing director, Morgan McKinley Financial Services.

“Paired with the hiring energy we’re seeing on the ground, if 2017 is anything to go on, we’re in for slow-but-steady growth in the months ahead,” Enver said.

And while the number of job-seekers was down 25% year over year in April, it was only down 5% from the previous month — a relatively modest figure in the wake of Brexit.

“Anything goes in a post-Brexit Britain, but signs are pointing to a course correction for job seeker confidence in the jobs market,” he said.

Morgan McKinley’s report also found the average salary increase for a professional moving from one organisation to another was 19% in April.

“This represents a very good return on changing jobs,” Enver said. Some disciplines are continuing to demand a premium such as technology, specifically data science, and legacy regulatory-driven functions such as risk, compliance and internal audit.
