UK – Men more likely than women to ask for pay rise and promotion

10 April 2017

One in three workers will press their boss for a pay rise and promotion this year, with men more likely to ask, according to a study by jobs site Adzuna.

Adzuna data showed that 40% of male employees are planning on a pay rise and a promotion in 2017, compared to 25% of women.

The data also found that women were more likely to be happy to stay in the same job without more pay or extra responsibility. Women were found to be 35% more likely to be content with their current situation and have no plans for career progression this year.

Meanwhile, 54% of women have no plans for a pay rise, compared to 40% of men.

"Although equal numbers of men and women plan to pick up a pay rise this year, far more men than women also hankered after a promotion from their current role,” Doug Monro, co-founder of Adzuna, said. "There may be some unrealistic male bravado here, but women also need to raise their expectations, and employers to promote them, if we are to see more equality in senior positions."
