UK – Matthew Taylor Inquiry set to call for zero-hours contracts employees to be given right to request fixed hours (BBC)

Matthew Taylor’s review of employment law, which includes an inquiry into self-employment and zero-hours contracts, is set to call for employees on zero-hours contracts to be given the right to request a move onto fixed hours, reports the BBC.  Employers would have to seriously take into consideration the request for fixed hours and then provide reasons for their decisions. According to data from the Office of National Statistics, the number of people in the UK whose main job is based on a zero-hours contracts rose by 13% last year to reach 905,000.

In its election manifesto, the Labour Party has pledged to ban all zero-hours contracts.
