UK – London gender pay gap is ‘unacceptable’- Staffing Quote of the Week

29 November 2016

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has stated that "it is unacceptable that in 2016 in London, that your gender determines how much you get paid and your career prospects.”

"Clearly we all need to do much more to put our own houses in order,” Khan said. “I am determined to lead by example." He is asking all Greater London Authority group organisations to publish action plans to address the pay gap.

Gender pay data published today for the GLA’s functional bodies reveals that men and women working full-time are paid differently with a gap of up to 11.6% (metropolitan police) between them.

A recent study from Korn Ferry Hay also was revealed that men in the UK are paid vastly more than women across many jobs and regions. The report stated: “The data confirms that a man and a woman in the same company, doing the same job, will usually be paid nearly the same, though still favouring men by an average of 1.6%.

The biggest pay gap of 34% was witnessed in the east Midlands, while in the south-east, the pay gap was 30% and was noted at 28% in the north-east and 26% in the West Midlands.

“Overall, the headline pay gap across the UK shows that men are paid vastly more than women,” Ben Frost, a pay data specialist at Korn Ferry Hay said, “This shows that organisations still aren’t dealing with the real issue here, which is that we need more women working in higher paying jobs and industries and at the most senior levels. At the moment firms are tinkering around the edges by offering benefits like flexible working to address the issue. More fundamental change needs to happen.”
