UK – Hermes’ courier case could have ‘major ramifications’ on labour rights in gig economy (The Guardian)

30 April 2018

Courier company Hermes faced an employment tribunal which began in Leeds on Monday in a case that could have major ramifications on labour rights in the growing gig economy, The Guardian reported. Eight couriers at Hermes — which delivers packages for retailers such as Next, Asos, John Lewis, Topshop and River Island — claim they are being denied basic workers’ rights by being forced to declare as self-employed. The workers are being represented in the tribunal by the GMB union which, in 2016, won a separate case against Uber.
