UK – Government scraps £65 fee for EU citizens to stay in the UK (The Independent)

22 January 2019

Prime Minister Theresa May has scrapped the £65 fee millions of EU citizens were going to have to pay to secure the right to continue living in the UK after Brexit, The Independent reports. The government’s EU Settlement Scheme requires all EU nationals and their family members who want to stay in the UK after Britain leaves the EU to register before 30 June 2021. The charge for doing so was set at £65 for adults and £32.50 for children under the age of 16. May said she can confirm “that when we roll out the scheme in full on 30 March, the government will waive the application fee so that there is no financial barrier for any EU nationals who wish to stay.” She added that anyone who paid the fee during the pilot phase will be reimbursed. Recruitment and Employment Confederation director of policy Tom Hadley said the announcement to scrap the fee “sent out a much needed positive message” and added that “reassuring people from the EU working across a range of sectors in the UK must remain a priority.” MPs rejected May's Brexit deal last week and are due to vote on a modified version of the deal next Tuesday.
