UK – Employee accuses Exeter University of exploiting temporary workers (Devon Live)

30 June 2017

A worker has accused Exeter University of exploiting temporary staff after being employed on a 'zero hours' basis, reports Devon Live. The worker, who chose to remain anonymous, states that they begun working with a fixed-hours four-month contract after joining the temporary staff bank, but then the worker said they ended up working effectively on a 'zero hours' casual basis and averaged three days a week with unpredictable hours. The GMB trade union has called on the university to review its casual staffing arrangements. The university stated that most staff were on permanent contracts, but fixed term or casual employment were used 'on occasion' where appropriate, including short-term and temporary contracts through the temporary staff bank.
