UK – Deliveroo offers voluntary ‘pay per delivery’ option in bid to support riders’ self-employment status (Telegraph)

01 June 2017

Food courier Deliveroo is offering its drivers the option to be paid for each order they deliver instead of per hour, reports the Telegraph.  Deliveroo hopes the option will support riders’ status as self-employed contractors, rather than employees. Last year, the food courier attempted to impose a pay-per-delivery contract, but now Deliveroo is offering the contract as voluntary. The company last week was in the midst of a legal battle over its workers’ status as the riders seek full employee rights which would give them sick pay, holiday and other benefits. Deliveroo maintains that its riders are self-employed contractors. Deliveroo states that in tests, its riders have earned more with ‘pay-per-delivery’ rather than on an hourly basis.
