UK – Deliveroo faces government inquiry over the pay and conditions of its riders (The Guardian)

18 June 2018

Human cloud food courier firm Deliveroo is set to face an inquiry by the work and pensions committee over the pay and conditions of its riders, reports The Guardian. Frank Field, MP and chairman of the committee, will gather evidence over the next five weeks which will include a round table at which Deliveroo’s riders will give oral evidence. Field will also be writing to Deliveroo to gather evidence about pay and conditions for its cyclists and moped riders. “The weight of the evidence I’ve seen shows that bogus self-employment is being peddled by those who benefit so handsomely from the gig economy, to avoid the obligations they have to their workforce,” Field said. “I now wish to see if this is a partial view or whether it, sadly, represents what is going on in yet another company operating in the gig economy.” The inquiry comes as Deliveroo faces legal action over the employment status of its riders and the inquiry also follows last weeks’ landmark employment law case that saw a plumber win against Pimlico Plumbers.
