15 October 2023

Tesco and Sainsbury’s both announced plans to hire temporary workers for the UK’s upcoming end-of-year holiday season. Tesco plans to hire 30,000 temporary colleagues while Sainsbury’s plans to hire 22,000.

The temporary jobs at Tesco are available across the UK and will mainly involve working in its Superstores and Extra stores. There may be opportunities for those taking on seasonal role to become permanent employees at Tesco stores.

Tesco announced its seasonal hiring plans on 13 October.

At Sainsbury’s, the company plans to hire for both its Sainsbury’s and Argos stores as well as its warehouses. Sainsbury’s announced hiring plans on 12 October and said it’s begun hiring temporary colleagues earlier this year than in previous years, starting as soon as last week.

Temporary colleagues at Sainsbury’s will work on fixed-term contracts ranging from three to 12 weeks. In-store jobs as well as fulfilment warehouse jobs will pay between £11 and £11.95 depending on location. Drive jobs will pay between £12 and £13.45 depending on location.

Tesco and Sainsbury’s aren’t the only retailers making seasonal temporary hires in the UK. City A.M. reported on 9 October that Aldi is hiring 3,000 permanent and temporary workers for the holiday season, while Morrisons is planning to hire 3,500.
