Temporary work placements in Portugal slip

The number of temporary work placements in Portugal fell by 4,075 people in January when compared to January 2023, according to the latest Barometer from the Portuguese Association of Companies in the Private Sector of Employment and Human Resources and ISCTE (University Institute of Lisbon).

Data from the Barometer showed that the number of placements in January 2024 totalled 28,440 and the index stood at 0.87. The index value in January 2024 reinforced the pattern recorded since the beginning of last year and emphasises the downward trend of the indicator, which remained below 1.0 throughout the year.

In terms of turnover, which is measured through an index that uses the total gross salaries paid within the scope of placements, the index was 0.93. This corresponded to one of the lowest values in the last three years. The Barometer noted a significant part of 2023 saw a drop in the number of contracts, combined with steadiness or a slight increase in turnover.

When it comes to gender, there was a decrease in the weight of contracts involving female workers when compared to the previous month. This percentage stood at 44.0% (which compares with 44.4% in the previous month). Men made up 56.0% in January.

By age group, 22.0% of contracts were signed by workers aged 16 to 24. Workers aged 25 to29 signed 20.3% of all contracts. The remaining age groups were as follows: 30 to 34 (17.6%), 35 to 39 (13.2%), 40 to 49 (18.1%), 50 (8.7%).

By business sector, companies that engaged temporary workers operate mainly in the ‘manufacture of components and accessories for motor vehicles’ sector, representing 12.7% of the total contracts signed in January 2024.

By occupation, temporary work was led by “other elementary professions” (32.4%) in January.
