Temporary work placements decline in October in Portugal

The number of temporary work placements in Portugal decreased by 5,061 people in October 2023 when compared to October 2022, according to the latest Barometer from the Portuguese Association of Companies in the Private Sector of Employment and Human Resources and ISCTE (University Institute of Lisbon).

Data from the Barometer showed that the number of placements in October 2023 totalled 32,730 while the index stood at 0.87. The Barometer noted that the TT Index value observed in October is the lowest in the last 34 months.

Turnover in October also saw a decline during the month with the index reaching the lowest level in three years.

The proportion of temporary work placement contracts signed by female workers stood at 44.8% in October compared to 55.2% for men.

By age group, 43.4% of contracts were signed by workers under 30 years of age. Workers aged 16-24 signed 22.7% of all contracts. Workers aged 25-29 signed 20.7% of all contracts. By age group the rest were as follows: 30-34 (16.5%), 35-39 (13.2%), 40-49 (17.9%), 50 (9.0%).

Companies that resorted to temporary work operate mainly in the ‘manufacture of components and accessories for motor vehicles’ sector, representing 11.4% of the total contracts signed in October.

In terms of the distribution of temporary work by main professions, demand was led by ‘Other Elementary Professions’ (31.1%).
