Switzerland – Unemployment rate remains steady in August and job vacancies rise

Switzerland’s unemployment rate remained 3.0% in August, unchanged from the previous month, according to data from the Regional Employment Services Centers (RAV) and State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

The data showed that compared to the previous month, unemployment decreased by 7,280 people, however the rate remained the same.

Meanwhile, the youth unemployment (15 to 24-year olds) rose by 3,089 people (+ 19.7%) to 18,752. The number of unemployed people over 50 decreased by 408 persons (-1.1%) to 35,347.

The number of vacancies reported to RAV increased by 233 to 12,439 posts. SECO added that there were a total of 195,334 jobseekers registered in August, which was 111 more than in the previous month.

Second quarter figures from Swiss Staffing, the Swiss Federation for Staffing Companies showed that the number of hours worked by temporary workers in Switzerland rose by 6.9% compared to the previous year.
