Switzerland – Jobless rate steady in August

The Swiss-registered unemployment rate stood at 2.4% in August 2019 steady when compared to the same period in 2018, according to figures from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

Data from SECO showed there were 99,552 unemployed people registered at the regional employment agencies in August. Compared with the same month of the previous year, unemployment fell by 8,341 (-7.7%). Compared with the previous month, this was 1,974 higher.

Youth unemployment fell by 1,356 persons (-9.4%) when compared to the same month of the previous year and increased by 2,313 (21.4%) when compared to the previous month. At the same time, the number of unemployed aged 50-64 decreased by 2,333 persons (-7.8%) when compared to the same period last year and by 188 persons (-0.7%) compared to July 2019.

A total of 169,849 jobseekers were registered, 1,431 fewer than the previous month. Compared to the same period of the previous year, this number fell by 10,126 persons (-5.6%).
