Swiss unemployment rate rises to 2.5% in January

The unemployment rate in Switzerland rose from 2.2% in January 2023 to 2.5% in January 2024, according to the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

When compared to the same month last year, unemployment increased by 12,399 people (12.3%).

According to surveys by SECO, 113,175 unemployed people were registered at the Regional Employment Centres (RAV) at the end of January 2024, 6,316 more than in the previous month. The unemployment rate rose from 2.3% in December 2023.

By age group, the number of unemployed people aged 50-64 increased over the month by 1,683 people (5.6%) to 31,807. Compared to the same month last year, this corresponds to an increase of 1,769 people (5.9%).

Youth unemployment (15 to 24 year olds) increased by 430 people (4.3%) to 10,332. Compared to the same month last year, this corresponds to an increase of 1,293 people (+14.3%).

Meanwhile, a total of 182,253 job seekers were registered, 5,274 more than in the previous month. Compared to the same period last year, this number increased by 12,737 people (+7.5%).
