Sweden –Tech companies help place technically skilled asylum seekers in jobs

26 August 2016

Startups, consultants and global tech businesses in Sweden and Finland are cataloging migrants' skills and education, training them, setting up internships and placing refugees in jobs, reports CNET.

Sync Accelerator, a Stockholm-based recruiting agency, is one such agency, founded by Johan Engstrom, it aims to match technically proficient refugees with Swedish businesses.

“Sweden is a lot worse than many others to see that skills come in various shapes and forms. I think that that is one of the mechanisms that makes it so difficult for immigrants to get on to the jobs market and have a career,” Engstrom told the Local.

LinkedIn in Sweden has also decided to assist refugees in helping them find tech jobs. LinkedIn created welcometalent.se, where refugees can search for jobs using the hashtag #welcometalent and other search terms that describe their skills and backgrounds.

Meanwhile, the Finnish government admits it has a challenge finding full-time jobs for all of its asylum seekers.

“If we succeed to have 3,000 of them employed, we will have done well," says Paivi Nerg, permanent secretary of the Ministry of the Interior.

According to data from the UN Refugee Agency, more than 1.1 million people fled to Europe from countries like Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. In Sweden, more than 163,000 refugees applied for asylum in 2015 while in Finland, there were 32,000 asylum seekers reported in 2015.
