Spain – Use of temporary contracts in the last decade have led to fall in indefinite contracts (Europa Press)

08 August 2019

The rise of temporary contracts in Spain in the last decade have resulted in a decrease in the number of indefinite contracts, reports Europa Press, citing a report from Spanish trade union, Unión Sindical Obrera (USO). The fall in the number of indefinite contracts over the total labour market in Spain went from 75.3% to 73.6%, well below the European average at 85.8%. In the last 10 years on average one in 10 new contracts has been indefinite while in 2019 6.29% have been indefinite, compared to 85% for temporary contracts. In June 2019, indefinite contracts saw a year-on-year decline of 14%. The union described this decrease as a worrying trend which highlights the country’s slowdown in economic activity.
