Spain – Temp to permanent contract conversion reaches ten-year high in 2018, Randstad finds

The conversion of temporary contracts to permanent contracts in Spain saw a growth of 22.1% in 2018 when compared to 2017, the highest increase in the last ten years, according to Randstad Spain.

In 2018 there were 837,988 conversions, the highest since 2007 when there were more than 900,000 conversion.

These 837,988 temporary contracts converted into permanent contracts represent 36.7% of the total indefinite contracts of the year, meaning that more than a third of the indefinite contracts of 2018 come from temporary contracts. 

Luis Pérez, director of Institutional Relations at Randstad said the data points to temporary hiring working as a bridge to a stable job.

Among regions, all regions reported an increase in the number of contracts converted into permanent contracts in the past year.

Among age groups, Randstad’s analysis showed that temporary contracts converted into permanent contracts increased in all age groups, with those older than 45 years old seeing the biggest increase (40.2%).

By education level, university and primary-educated professionals, saw record highs in the number of conversions. Those with secondary education also reported an increase in conversions for the sixth consecutive year.
