Spain – SMEs will struggle to fill vacancies in the next ten years, research finds

25 June 2018

In the next ten years, SMEs in Spain will encounter difficulties when filling vacancies according to research from Randstad and the Spanish Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises.

According to the research which studied the ratio between the demand and the total offer of employment by occupations, roles in the commercial management, commerce, hospitality, structural engineering, finance, management, legal services and digitisation will be the most difficult to cover.

Randstad Research and the Confederation found that during the next ten years there will be a mismatch between supply and demand in the labor market. This mismatch will then be compensated by the excess of supply in certain professional profiles, since some of the unfilled positions will end up being covered by the excess supply of other qualifications, either by transfers to other positions, as a result of training actions, or by access to said overqualified positions.

Meanwhile, the research also analysed the growth of professional profiles over the next ten years depending on the training of the professional.

Over the next ten years, the demand for professional and technical roles, with higher education, will grow the most, with a 2% increase. Followed by unskilled occupations (1.5%) and skilled employees described as specialised professionals with knowledge in certain trades, such as mechanics, welders or machinists, among others (0.5%).

Randstad and the Confederation expect that over the next ten years, SMEs will generate 1.6 million new jobs, of which almost one million will be generated in the first five years.
