Spain – Nearly half of permanent contracts were converted from temporary contracts in 2017

22 January 2018

In 2017, 40% of permanent contracts in Spain began as a temporary contract, according to data from Randstad Spain.

The data showed in 2017 there were 686,445 conversions of temporary contracts into permanent contracts, representing an increase of 17.9% from last year. This is the highest figure in the past eight years. These 686,445 temporary contracts converted into permanent contracts represent 40.1% of the total indefinite contracts of the year, meaning that nearly half of the indefinite contracts in 2017 come from temporary contracts.

"The increase in temporary contracts converted into permanent contracts and the approach to conversion rates prior to the crisis confirm the positive trend of the labor market and the economic recovery. Similarly, it shows that temporary hiring works as a bridge to a stable job. In fact, for those profiles with less qualification, temporary hiring helps them to increase their employability through experience, "says

Luis Pérez, Director of Institutional Relations at Randstad said that the figures show that temporary hiring works as a bridge to a stable job and that for those with less qualification, “temporary hiring helps them to increase their employability through experience.”

Meanwhile Randstad’s data analysed age groups and showed that temporary contracts converted into permanent contracts have increased in all age groups. Those over 45 years of age saw the biggest increase in conversions compared to 2016 (23.8%). Employees under 25 saw the next biggest increase (22%). Furthermore, employees aged between 25 and 45 years recorded the lowest increase (15.4%).
