Slovakia – Parliament rejects draft amendment to cap number of foreign workers employed via temp employment agencies (TASR)

06 February 2019

The number of foreigners employed in Slovakia via temporary employment agencies will not be limited, as Parliament yesterday rejected a draft amendment to the Labour Code, reports the News Agency of the Slovak Republic (TASR). The draft amendment was submitted by right-wing political party ‘We are Family’. The party stated that the draft aimed to protect the Slovak labour market in favour of Slovaks against foreign workers employed via temporary employment agencies or other employers. MPs from We Are Family proposed a 20% limit on foreign workers that can be employed by agencies and employers. According to We Are Family, the draft was presented because the number of foreigners from non-EU countries is 'skyrocketing'. This surge, claims the movement, began after the investment contract with carmaker Jaguar Land Rover was signed, in which the government bound itself to speed up the process of giving residency permits to non-EU citizens.
