Netherlands – Temporary workers more likely to be out of work, study claims

23 May 2012

Temporary workers are twice as likely to end up being unemployed, according to research by the Dutch Council of Work and Income (RWI). In a recent study the RWI has investigated how many people have found a job after a period of unemployment.

Although the research found that a “significant proportion of [former] beneficiaries find employment in the temporary staffing industry”, it is also temporary workers that run a higher risk of being unemployed again.

The study, which analysed data from 2005 to 2008, revealed that the majority of those going back to work often find positions in part-time employment.

The “sustainability” of part-time workers is comparable to that of full-time workers as their risks of being unemployed is far lower than that of temporary workers.

While many unemployed people find work as temporary employees, the research also showed that the trade, catering, healthcare and financial sectors proved to be amongst the most successful job sectors for previously unemployed people.
