Netherlands – Generation Y workers look for mentors and coaches, not bosses

12 September 2016

Generation Y employees (born between 1980 and 2001) in the Netherlands view the ideal leader as a coach or mentor and dislike the hierarchical bossy type, according to research from Profile Dynamics, a Dutch-based business consulting firm.

The report shows that generation Y’s professionals say that a manager must be motivating and inspiring according to young professionals rather than simply instruct as a manager. This makes young people feel more at home in the organization.

According to the research from Profile Dynamics, it states: “It is important that organizations take a critical look at the characteristics and capabilities of their leaders. An appropriate leadership style is an effective means to bind the younger generation of workers and buoys. Given the improving labor market is currently one of the biggest challenges that many HR professionals are facing,”

"Before you know it, that precious generation Y'er left your organization,” Wilma Kuipers, Director of Business Development at Profile Dynamics, said. “So it is important to make sure that executives have the capacity to stimulate young people as much as possible."
