Netherlands – Employment rises in third quarter, jobs growth led by temporary employment sector

The Dutch labour market saw 271,000 jobs added in the year from the third quarter of 2017 to the third quarter 2018. This is the largest annual growth in jobs in 11 years, according to data from Statistics Netherlands.

On a quarterly basis, the number of jobs increased by 60,000 in Q3. This is the eighth consecutive quarter in which the number of jobs increased by at least 50,000.

When broken down by sector, Statistics Netherlands found that 13,000 were added from the temporary employment sector, which accounted for the largest share of growth among sectors in the third quarter.

The temporary employment sector now has 842,000 jobs, this is 10% of all jobs among employees, and is an increase from 7% in 2010.

Trade, transport and the hotel and catering industry and business services industries saw the second and third-highest growth in the third quarter, respectively.

Meanwhile, the number of jobs for employees rose by 51,000 in the third quarter while the number of self-employed jobs increased by 10,000.

The data also found that there were 262,000 job vacancies in the third quarter, an increase of 11,000 when compared to the previous quarter. in the third quarter.

Statistics Netherlands added that the Dutch labour market tightened further in the third quarter as there was an average of 1.3 unemployed stood against each vacancy. A tense labour market means that the demand for labour is above average and the available supply is relatively low.
