Netherlands – Deliveroo in talks with trade unions over employee rights (DutchNews.nl)

19 September 2017

Food courier Deliveroo is in discussions with Dutch trade unions CNV and the Riders Union over whether its riders should be considered self-employed, reports DutchNews.nl. The talks reportedly began after weeks of objections from delivery cyclists after the firm announced they must all be ‘ZZP-ers’ (Dutch term for freelancers). Last month, Deliveroo announced that it would gradually replace its employed couriers with freelancers. The CNV union reportedly claimed that Deliveroo is ‘evading its responsibilities and wants to push all delivery workers into a ZZP working relationship.’ It also suggests the firm is operating as a courier service while registered as a catering company, with implications for employee rights. Deliveroo countered that the self-employed model best suits the flexibility its cyclists want. CNV also threatened to go to court over employee rights earlier this month. Deliveroo has faced similar issues over the employment status of its couriers in the UK and France.
