More than half of enterprises in Austria, 60.5%, consist of only one self-employed person without employees, Statistics Austria reported Monday. However, they play a large role in the human health and social work sector; they agency found that 78.8% of enterprises in the sector are one-person businesses. In total, there were 81,251 one-person businesses in human health and social work.

Other segments with large numbers of one-person businesses included “agriculture, forestry and fishing,” which has 77,808 one-person businesses, and “professional scientific and technical activities,” where there are 78,861 one-person businesses.

Statistics Austria noted only 4.8% of all businesses were active at more than one location; however, 52.9% of all workers were employed at these firms in 2021.

Overall, 700,000 enterprises in Austria employed more than 4.7 million people in 2021.

Another finding in the report: the number of employees commuting into Austria has doubled in 2021 to 247,044 persons compared to 2011. Austria borders eight countries: Germany, the Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland and Lichtenstein. Except for Switzerland and Lichtenstein, all these countries are part of the European Union.
