Italy – Uber banned in country over unfair competition

11 April 2017

An Italian court has banned Uber, the ride-sharing app, after local taxi companies filed a lawsuit over unfair competition.

The ruling, which Uber said it plans to appeal, is based on a law from 1992. Uber now has 10 days to shut its services in Italy or face fines of up to €10,000 for each day that it defies the court’s ruling.

In a statement, Uber said: “We are shocked by the Italian court’s decision and will appeal. Thousands of professional, licensed drivers use the Uber app to make money and provide reliable transportation at the push of a button for Italians.”

The ruling follows Uber’s shut down of its operations in Denmark after the country imposed new taxi laws.
