Italy – Study finds 592,000 occasional workers in 2017

07 May 2018

A new study by the CGIA found that 592,000 people in Italy last year worked for less than 10 hours per week, up 20.3% from 2007.

Of those who worked less than 10 hours per week, 389,000 were employees and 203,000 were self-employed.

However, the majority of people in Italy who worked for less than 10 hours a week did not work in the gig economy, using online platforms, according to the report.

Paolo Zabeo of the CGIA said while gig economy online platforms are booming, jobs of less than 10 hours per week are still focused on traditional sectors such as personal services. Of the 592,000, two out of three were women, mainly employed in personal services such as babysitters, carers or service activities related to personal care such as hairdressers, beauticians and wellness centers.

In addition, the hotel-restaurant and businesses service segment see a high incidence of this type of employee.
