Greek temporary jobs on the rise in Q4

Temporary jobs in Greece rose by 17.6% in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to the same period a year ago but fell by 11.5% when compared to the previous quarter, according to research from the Hellenic Statistical Authority.

Overall, the number of temporary jobs in the fourth quarter stood at approximately 306,900, up from approximately 261,000 the year prior but down from 346,700 in Q3 2023.

The share of persons with temporary jobs amounted to 10.7%, decreased by 11.5% compared to the previous quarter and increased by 17.6% compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

In the fourth quarter 2023, the majority of the employed worked as employees (68.6%), whereas a significant share is working as self-employed without employees (20.4%).

Meanwhile, the number of permanent jobs in Greece stood at 2.56 million, down 1.34% from the prior quarter and down 2.07% from the same period a year ago.

Part-time employment amounts to 7.5%, recording an increase by 13.2% in comparison with the previous quarter and a decrease by 6.3% compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

Full-time employment fell by 2.76% when compared to the previous month but up 1.81% when compared to the prior year period.

Further labour market data showed that the unemployment rate for the fourth quarter of 2023 was 10.5%. The unemployment rate was 10.8% in the previous quarter (2023 Q3) and 11.9% in the corresponding quarter of the previous year (2022 Q4).

The number of unemployed persons amounted to 488,667, recording a decrease by 5.0% compared to the previous quarter and a decrease by 12.5% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

At the same time, the number of persons employed amounted to 4,183,128, recording a decrease by 1.7% compared to the previous quarter and an increase by 1.2% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

The number of persons outside the labour force, i.e., the persons who are neither working nor looking for a job, amounted to 4,360,932.
