Germany – Working in temporary sector increases chance of permanent employment

14 September 2016

A recent study by the Institute of Employment Research (IAB) in Germany shows that working in the temporary sector increases the chances of permanent employment.

IAB researchers studied temporary workers between 2005 and 2014 and found that Germans who were previously unemployed and took up temporary work were then 15% more likely to find permanent jobs. For unemployed foreigners living in Germany, the number was 18%.

Researchers called this the “bridge effect” as temporary work serves as a bridge between unemployment and permanent employment.

The institute states that the reason for the increase in permanent employment for foreign workers is because they have the opportunity to expand their language skills gain experience and get to know the rules while they are in temporary employment.

Researchers have come to the conclusion that for those who come from unemployment, temporary work is beneficial. For migrants, temporary work is advantageous since they have greater access to the labor market and can learn German language quicker while they are working.
