Germany – Total employment reaches record levels, temporary worker growth highest since 2011

12 September 2016

Employment figures for the year of 2015 for Germany reached a new record with a total of 43 million new workers and 2.2% of those workers were in temporary employment according to the Federal Employers' Association of Personnel Service Providers (BAP).

BAP states that in the context of strong labor market figures for 2015, the proportion of temporary employment in the overall labor market remains low.  While total employment has grown steadily since 2010, temporary work growth had paused and saw declines in 2012 and 2013, with 2015 growing back to 2.2%, the same number as 2011.

"2015 was a good year for the German labor market and temporary employment,” Thomas Hetz, CEO of BAP, said. “49% of temporary workers, who received a job in 2015 were previously unemployed up to one year with a further 20% who were unemployed longer than one year or never previously employed. Temporary work provided nearly 70% of employees with work who previously had no steady employment. Once again, these figures clearly show that the temporary work is an important instrument for labor market integration.

“Some critics are stirred up and worry that the industry continues to expand at the expense of other areas in the labor market, this is purely politically motivated and is contradicted by the facts. The German labor market is doing well, new regulations in temporary employment are unnecessary and to critics I can only say one thing: temporary work brings the German economy necessary flexibility - making it an indispensable building block in German Labour Market," Hetz said.
