Germany – Number of refugees integrated in labour market improves, BAP credits temporary employment for the increase

23 August 2018

More than 300,000 refugees from the eight asylum countries found a job in Germany, according to May data from the Federal Employers' Association of Personnel Service Providers (BAP). This is an increase of increase of 88,000 from the previous year.

BAP added that refugees are being well integrated into Germany's jobs market.

The eight asylum countries are: Pakistan, Nigeria, Iran, Eritrea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and Syria.

“Temporary work proves to be a special driver of integration for refugees, because refugees, especially with the help of temporary employment agencies, are increasingly finding work,” BAP said.

BAP found that of the more than 69,000 unemployed people from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and five other countries receiving social insurance contributions between May 2017 and April 2018 more than every third person works in temporary employment.

In 2016, Germany announced that it would remove some of the barriers that asylum seekers and refugees face when they want to access the country's labour market.

Last year, new laws came into force which imposed restrictions to assignment lengths, work contracts and managed service provision arrangements. The new regulations include an equal pay claim (temps will receive the same pay as regular workers) after 9 months and the maximum allowance period of 18 months.
