Germany – Majority of employers satisfied with the labour market integration of refugees and asylum seekers

16 March 2017

More than 80% of German employers are satisfied with the work done by asylum seekers and refugees according to a study, ‘The Labour Market Integration of Fugitives: Germany’ by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The OECD states that the legal framework as well as support services for access to the labour market in Germany are important for successful integration.

According to all surveyed companies in the study, ‘good to very good’ German language skills - even for low-quality jobs - are necessary for successful employment.

“Germany must now follow the structural integration after completing the first steps. Offers for vocational education and training as well as for subject-specific German lessons should be further developed, especially for low-qualified people,” Gabriela Ramos, OECD Chief of Staff and Sherpa (emissary) to the G20. “Such measures are an essential prerequisite for the fact that the host society benefits from long-term migration.”

Approximately 2,200 German companies were interviewed by the OECD and the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK).

According to the OECD, in 2015 and 2016, an estimated total of 1.2 million people arrived in Germany to ask for asylum.
