France – Protesters stage last demonstration against labour law reform

15 September 2016

Labour union leaders in France are protesting today and have vowed to keep fighting a controversial labour reform law but have said that demonstrations against the divisive legislation were coming to an end, reports Reuters.

The labour reform law known as the “El Khomri Law”, was forcibly passed in Parliament on 22 July, however, before the law was passed, it had triggered months of protests and union strikes which closed down numerous businesses including the Eiffel Tower and led to violence.

Today’s protest led to airport disruptions and cancelled flights, reports the The Local FR.

Demonstrators also marched through the city of Belfort where the government is in the midst of a clash with train-building company Alstom over the future of an under-threat locomotive factory, reports the Straits Times.

President Francois Hollande’s has backed the labour reforms, which he says will help unemployment, however opponents have said the reforms make hiring and firing easier and favors the employer rather than the worker.
