France – President Emmanuel Macron to hold talks on labour market reform (CTV News)

24 May 2017

Newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron is holding meetings with unions and business firms to discuss reforming the country's labour market, reports CTV News.  Macron pledged during his presidential campaign that a reform of the labour market would be a top priority in order to boost hiring and plans to implement his reforms by the end of the summer. Part of his reforms include moving the country’s collective wage bargaining from the industry to the company level. This has caused concerns from unions fearing they would weaken workers protections. Macron plans to implement his reforms by the end of the summer. According to statistical website Eurostat, the unemployment rate in March 2017 stood at 10.1% in France.
