Finland – Uber suspends operations as it waits for new regulations (Business Insider UK)

10 July 2017

Uber is suspending UberPop, its main operation out of Finland, as it waits for local regulators to remove taxi licence permit quotas and fare restrictions, reports Business Insider UK. The ride sharing company’s UberPop service allows any driver to sign up and offer unlicensed taxi trips providing their car meets certain criteria, however the law in Finland dictates that all Uber drivers have a licence. Drivers who have been caught operating as UberPop drivers have been fined and ordered to give up their earnings. Uber is facing similar legal battles around the world. Last week an advocate general for the EU stated that part of Uber’s operations were illegal.

“We want to ensure that we do not pose drivers who use our app or our employees any unnecessary issues, especially now that we have a bright future to look forward to. We believe that the best way to do so and focus on the future is to pause UberPop and relaunch in the summer of 2018,” Joel Järvinen, Uber’s country manager for Finland, said in a blog post last week. “While we are looking forward to the reforms coming into effect, we have decided it is best to pause UberPop from 15 August until the new regulations allow a better environment.”
