European court wants 300,000 Spanish government temps to be perm

23 February 2024

The High Court of Justice of the European Union published a ruling that covers more than 300,000 public-sector temporary workers in Spain, seeking to make them permanent, The Corner reported. It described the ruling as a setback for the Spanish government.

The CJEU has urged Spain to change the law to avoid these cases that affect thousands of temporary workers who work under the formula of “indefinite non-fixed term” contracts which can be extended for decades and ended without any severance pay for the worker. In the absence of any other regulation, the CJEU states that immediate conversion into permanent contracts is considered a valid option.
