Firms such as Uber and others had used independent contractors to provide rides to customers on their work services platforms. However, some companies are using autonomous vehicles to provide rides to customers, and this may be the future. Last week, regulators in California agreed to allow two firms — Google’s Waymo and General Motors’ Cruise — to transport paying customers in fully autonomous vehicles 24 hours per day seven days a week.
