Accidents among temporary workers in Germany trend down

09 April 2024

The number of reportable work-related accidents in Germany per 1,000 temporary employees has halved from 34 to 17 most recently since 2008, reports the Frankfurter Allgemeine, citing a report by administrative trade association VBG, which is responsible for the temporary employment industry. The report analysed the now completed accident evaluation for 2022.

For all commercial professions combined, the German Statutory Accident Insurance, the umbrella association of professional associations, recently determined an average of 21 reportable work-related accidents per 1,000 insured people. It has fallen by around a third in the decade and a half. Construction workers traditionally bear the highest risk, with their employers' liability insurance association recently counting 45.5 work-related accidents per 1,000 employees; However, this number has also fallen by around a third.

Part of the explanation for the falling number of accidents in temporary work is also provided by the weakness of the industry, which began in 2018. Previously, most temporary work took place in production jobs, but the focus has now shifted to transport and logistics jobs, as the report shows.

By far the most common cause of accidents is loss of control when handling machines.
