According to the latest figures published by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union, the euro area (EA16) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 9.6% in August 2009, compared with 9.5% in July. It was 7.6% in August 2008.

According to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), there were 423,639 people signing on the so-called 'Live Register' as unemployed during September 2009 compared to 440,056 in August, a drop of 16,417. In September 2008 there were 240,217 people on the Live Register.
