According to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), there were 423,639 people signing on the so-called 'Live Register' as unemployed during September 2009 compared to 440,056 in August, a drop of 16,417. In September 2008 there were 240,217 people on the Live Register.
Paul Carroll of staffing agency CPL Recruitment told the Irish Independent, "there is definitely a back to work feel after no business at all was done in July and August. And while a lot of these jobs are temporary, my experience of the last two recessions shows that there was always an increase in temporary activity in the months leading up to the end of a recession."
Brian McCormick of Ireland's National Training and Employment Authority (FAS) said, "we have seen 5,700 job vacancies advertised with us, the highest since last November. Healthcare workers are mostly in demand as vacancies in areas such as childcare and nursing homes were up by 18% on last year."
Although the numbers on the Live Register increased by 600 last month, once seasonal factors such as the return of schools and colleges were taken into account, the unemployment rate held steady at 12.6% after increasing every month since December 2007.
