LinkedIn & Recruit Market Leaders in Online Job Advertising

SIA Provides Global Industry Update

Mountain View, California — July 19, 2019 — Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA) has published its 2019 update on the Online Job Advertising Market. This detailed look at online job advertising firms—a collection of websites and mobile applications that offer employers the ability to advertise local, national and/or international job postings—provides insights into total market size, the distinct business models (7) dominating the space, general trends, the impact of M&A, and ranks the largest firms in the segment.

With total revenue reaching $22 billion in 2018, SIA estimates that online job advertising grew 15% in 2018. Growth has been driven by continued economic expansion (driving increased demand for workers and increasing candidate scarcity), increased mobile phone access and mobile solutions, more differentiated job search products, and more candidate traffic driven by the Google for Jobs API.

The business models defined by SIA as comprising the online job advertising segment include Job Aggregators, Job Boards, Online Classifieds, Programmatic Job Advertising & Distributors, Social Media, Community Sites and Job Post Optimizers.

The five largest online job advertising firms based on 2018 revenue are:

Rank Parent Company Country HQ 2018 Annual Revenue
(USD millions)
Primary Brands
(where different from, or in addition to, the Parent Company brand)
1 Microsoft (Linkedin) US 5,982 Linkedin
2 Recruit Holdings Japan 4,396 Indeed, Glassdoor, SimplyHired, Rikunabi NEXT, FromAravi
3 SEEK Australia 951 JobsDB, JobStreet, Jora, Zhaopin, Catho, OCC mundial
4 CareerBuilder US 746 JobsCentral, JobScout24, Broadbean, Sologig, Headhunter, CareerRookie, MiracleWorkers, WorkInRetail, JobsInMotion
5 Axel Springer Germany 724 Totaljobs, Jobsite, Stepstone, (IrishJobs, CareerJunction, MyJobsGroup), YourCareerGroup, Drushim, Appcast

“2018 was a good year for most of the online job advertising industry with revenue growth being achieved by 45 of the 50 firms assessed in our report. However, the market remains challenging and highly competitive, particularly for traditional job boards (still the predominant model). Pricing pressure is a feature of the market as basic job board functionalities have become commoditized and new business models continue to capture market share,” said John Nurthen, SIA’s Executive Director of Global Research.
