Workers stay at firms for median 4.4 years

September 14, 2010

The median number of years that wage and salary workers had been with their current employers was 4.4 as of January, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The employee tenure measure, which is released every two years, was last recorded at 4.1 years in 2008.

The increase reflects, in part, large job losses among less-senior workers in the recession, according to the BLS.

Workers in the manufacturing industry had the highest median tenure among major industries at 6.1 years. Workers in the leisure and hospitality industry had the lowest median tenure at 2.5 years.

Median tenure increased with age, according to the report. Workers ages 55 to 64 had a median tenure of 10.0 years while workers ages 25 to 34 had a median tenure of 3.1 years.
